Like many in the climate and social justice movements, we at #ShutDownDC are meeting this moment by exploring new creative ways to take action. The COVID-19 pandemic is shining a bright light on one of the key beliefs underlying our organizing: Our struggles are interconnected. And while the world isn't the same as it was two weeks ago, we refuse to stop fighting for our neighbors, for our city, and for our world.
Will you commit to taking four actions on Monday through Thursday of this week? Let’s drive some change together from our homes!
The crisis in Canada is ongoing. Despite the pandemic, construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline is going ahead -- with the financial support of private equity company KKR & Co. Join Rising Tide North America and allies in flooding KKR's phone lines, inbox, and Twitter feeds with messages telling them to respect the rights of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs and drop the risky Coastal GasLink pipeline immediately.
RSVP to this Facebook event for more information.
Tuesday -- Support tenants in DC #NoPriceGougingHousing
Call Mayor Bowser at (202) 727-2643 and you councilmembers (contact info is here) to demand a rent freeze during the COVID-19 crisis.
See http://dctenantsunion.org/eviction-moratorium-now/ for more information and a call script.
If you don’t live in DC, call the elected officials in your area!
Wednesday -- Keep defending DMV-area immigrants
Follow Sanctuary DMV, an incredible local effort to protect immigrants and targeted communities. Put their emergency hotline number into your phone and use it whenever you see ICE: (202) 335-1183.
Thursday -- Tell Amazon to protect workers from COVID-19
As a trillion-dollar corporation owned by the richest person on the planet, Amazon can and should put public health before their own profits. Sign this petition telling Jeff Bezos to offer paid leave to all Amazon workers and tell us what his plans are if COVID-19 disrupts Amazon’s operations.
Thursday BONUS! -- Join our weekly meeting! Information will be posted at https://www.shutdowndc.org/calendar.
