As a network that is deeply based in the climate movement, we recognize that there is no climate justice without racial justice. Black organizers in DC and around the country are calling for everyone to take bold direct action to demand: 1. Defund the police
2. Defend Black Life
3. Stop Criminalizing protestors
4. Invest in violence interruption and prevention, mental health in schools, and public housing
5. Ban Stop and Frisk
6. Cops out of school
7. End cash bail in Maryland
8. Dissolve police unions
9. Decriminalize sex work
10. No new jails in DC
Dozens of organizations and movements are mobilizing all over the District to march, rally, and disrupt business as usual. The Movement for Black Lives website lists more than 30 events here in DC!
#ShutDownDC is answering that call by coming together to mobilize climate voices for Black lives. Join us at 5pm SHARP at 18th St. NW and California St. NW in Adams Morgan, in front of the Marie Reed Recreation Center. From there we’ll march down to Black Lives Matter Plaza. If we can do anything to make this action more accessible, please contact us at accessibility@ShutDownDC.org
Then at 8pm a march is stepping off from Black Lives Matter Plaza as a collective show of outrage at the system of racist police violence. (A previous email erroneously said that Black Lives Matter DC is would be leading that march. They’ve asked us to clarify that while they certainly WILL be there, no specific organization is leading this collective expression of outrage.)
Throughout the evening you can watch LIVE updates on our interactive live map at ShutDownDC.org/619.
We recognize that not everybody can make to an in-person march at this moment. If you can’t make it in person, we invite you to join the Sunrise Movement DC Hub for an online action starting at 5pm. Click here for more details and registration information.
